AEO research
Every AI search visibility tool we could find, and what they cost
Around 120 tools claim to measure whether AI recommends your brand. Most of them run one prompt, once a day, and call the result a trend.

We went looking for every tool on the market that offers to track AI search visibility, share of voice or citations, from the enterprise platforms down to the weekend projects with a Stripe link. We found around 120. This is the list, the indicative prices, and an honest assessment of which ones are measuring something and which ones are reporting a coin flip.
Our bias, stated up front. Question.Marketing sells AEO and GEO services. We do not sell a tool and we take no affiliate commission from anything named on this page. That is a different bias, not an absence of one. We benefit commercially if you conclude that a dashboard is not a strategy. Read the page knowing that, and check every pricing page yourself before you buy.
Why should you distrust every list like this one, including this one?
Almost every article ranking for "best AI visibility tools" is published by a vendor that puts itself first without saying so. Frase ranks Frase first. Dageno ranks Dageno first. Orchly ranks Orchly first. Several review sites that look independent are owned by tools in the list.
The two best pieces of research in the category are both honest about their conflict, and both are still marketing.
Glen Allsopp's price comparison at Detailed, published 8 September 2026, is the most rigorous normalised pricing study available. It compares eight tools across six identical tracking scenarios and concludes Ahrefs Brand Radar is cheapest in four of the six. Glen discloses clearly and repeatedly that Detailed is now an Ahrefs company and that he works at Ahrefs.
Tim Soulo's 47-vendor market analysis, published 5 March 2026, is the most complete public census of the category. It concludes that the decisive variable is real versus synthetic prompt data, and that one vendor derives its prompts from observed search behaviour. That vendor is Ahrefs. Tim Soulo is Ahrefs' CMO.
Both are genuinely useful. We have used both. We are telling you who wrote them because nobody else in the results will.
How did we rank them?
Ranking tools that do different jobs on one ladder is partly nonsense, so here is the criterion in the open: evidence quality per pound spent. Each tool was assessed on seven things.
- Methodology disclosure. Is there a published page stating collection method, corpus, refresh rate and limitations?
- Collection method. Scraped live interface, API, or consumer panel. Disclosed or not.
- Repetition. Runs per prompt, per engine, per cycle.
- Data provenance. Prompts you invented, prompts derived from search behaviour, or observed AI conversations from a panel.
- Denominator clarity. Does the vendor define what its headline score divides by?
- Price transparency. Published, or sales-gated.
- Action layer. Does it only report, or does it help you fix what it found?
A tool can be excellent and still score badly here. Enterprise platforms lose points for sales-gated pricing even when the product is strong. Take the ranking as a starting argument, not a verdict.
Which tools are measurement-grade?
Tier one. The only tools where the sampling, the corpus or the panel is serious enough to survive a statistician.
01 Evertune
Price: Enterprise. Collection priced at $2.40 per 1,000 prompts.
Over 1,000,000 prompts per brand per month across seven platforms, raised tenfold from a previous standard of 100,000. EverPanel adds consumer panel data. The only vendor publishing prospect-facing education that correctly explains margin of error, including the example that five repeats of a single prompt carries a 27 point margin.
Where it pinches. Heavily oriented to base-model brand perception rather than live retrieval. Enterprise sales cycle. Competitor comparisons describe the compliance framework as still developing.
02 Profound
Price: $99 Starter (annual billed). $399 Growth. Enterprise commonly reported at $2,000 to $5,000 and up.
Prompt Volumes is built on a double opt-in consumer panel contributing hundreds of millions of prompts a month against a dataset in the billions, which is the best prompt-demand data on the market. Agent Analytics tracks crawler behaviour at a level nobody else matches.
Where it pinches. Growth publishes 9,000 responses a month across 100 prompts and 3 engines. That is one run per prompt per day. Pricing has retreated towards demo-led.
03 Ahrefs Brand Radar
Price: Custom prompt packages from $50 for 2,500 checks, $100 for 7,000, $250 for 25,000. Overage $0.010 to $0.020 per check. AI indexes $199 per platform or $699 for all six. Base Ahrefs plans from $129 Lite.
The most transparent methodology page in the category. It publishes corpus size per engine (roughly 346 million monthly prompts in total), states that prompts come from Google People Also Ask and its 110 billion keyword database, confirms collection runs through free public web interfaces, and labels share of voice and impressions as modelled indicators rather than measured reach. Cheapest per check in the Detailed study at $0.0125 to $0.0145.
Where it pinches. The corpus refreshes monthly on a 90-day window, so there is no week-over-week signal from the index itself. People Also Ask questions are a proxy for AI prompts, not AI prompts.
Which trackers are honest about what they do?
Tier two. Good products, doing roughly one run a day, mostly not pretending otherwise.
04 Peec AI
Price: $95 / $245 / $495 a month for 50 / 150 / 350 prompts on 3 models. 15% off annual. Agency credit plans $245 to $1,195. Extra models $30 to $140.
Unlimited seats on every tier, daily collection, a native MCP server, source-level citation reporting and Looker Studio from Advanced. Berlin-based, reporting $29m raised and $10m and up in ARR (vendor-published). The credit definition in their own documentation, one prompt times one model times one day equals one credit, is the clearest public admission of the one-run problem anywhere in this market. They deserve credit for publishing it.
Where it pinches. Three-model cap on self-serve. Report-only by design.
05 Promptwatch
Price: $95 entry. $199 a month for 10,000 checks on agency pricing, or $245 on brand pricing. $399 for 20,000. $579 for 200 prompts on 4 models.
Scrapes the live interface rather than the APIs and argues the case for it publicly. Adds crawler logs, AI traffic attribution and content agents that publish fixes, which puts it in the small group doing monitoring plus execution. Second cheapest per check at roughly $0.020.
06 Semrush AI Visibility / AIO
Price: $99 a month per domain for 25 custom prompts and four engines, or inside Semrush One at $199 / $299 / $549. Classic suite separately at $139.95 to $499.95.
Documentation states that prompt responses are captured from real requests rather than LLM APIs, that reports can run up to 300 times a day, that there are roughly 14 regional databases, and that the AI Visibility Score is a composite of topic coverage and mention consistency. Prompt data comes from AI search clickstream plus Google's keyword dataset, with Datos as the clickstream arm. Now an Adobe company following the $1.9bn acquisition announced 19 November 2025 and completed 28 April 2026.
Where it pinches. Twenty-five prompts is small. Add-ons stack at roughly $60 per 50 extra prompts and $99 per extra domain or seat. Independent reviews disagree with Semrush's own documentation on engine coverage.
07 Scrunch AI
Price: Published tiers around $250 to $500. Core includes five user licences. Higher volumes sales-gated.
Persona-based analysis is a real differentiator. Co-authored the Stacker distribution study, one of the better pieces of primary research in the category.
Where it pinches. Does not publicly disclose prompts executed per brand, or make any statement on statistical significance.
08 Surfer AI Tracker
Price: Roughly $95 a month as an add-on, or $219 to $359 in the Detailed scenarios, on top of Surfer from around $89.
Tracks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini. Does not track Claude. Reads answers from each engine's own interface rather than the APIs, and published the study showing roughly 24% brand overlap and 4% source overlap between scraped and API results, which quietly undermines a chunk of its competitors. The optimise-from-tracker button into the content editor is the tightest monitoring-to-action loop in the mid market.
09 Searchable
Price: $125 a month up to 100 prompts on 3 models. $150 for 100 on 4. $400 to $525 at higher volumes.
Cheapest option in two of the six Detailed scenarios. Flat pricing that does not punish you for adding prompts early.
10 AthenaHQ
Price: $295 a month self-serve, with a free tier.
Positioned for brands rather than agencies. No published run count.
11 Writesonic (GEO suite)
Price: Tiered, published.
A content platform that grew an AI visibility layer. Reasonable if content production is your bottleneck rather than measurement.
12 AirOps
Price: Enterprise, sales-gated.
Content workflow first, visibility second. Publishes the State of AI Search report, which found roughly 85% of brand mentions in AI answers originate from external domains.
What can you get on a small budget?
Tier three. Useful for proving to a board that the channel exists. Not enough sample to run a programme on.
13 Otterly.ai
Price: $29 Lite for 15 prompts. $189 Standard for 100. $489 Premium for 400. Enterprise from $1,000. Extra prompts $99 per 100.
Four base engines. Google AI Mode and Gemini are paid add-ons at $9 to $149 per tier, and Claude is the priciest add-on, which can take a Premium plan past $1,200 all in. Unlimited seats, daily tracking, a 2025 Gartner Cool Vendor listing, self-funded out of Vienna, reporting 40,000 and up users (vendor-published).
Where it pinches. The per-prompt sums are inverted: Lite works out at roughly $1.93 per prompt against $1.22 on Premium, so the cheap tier is the most expensive way to buy. Fifteen prompts is a demo, not a baseline. Charging extra for Gemini and AI Mode in 2026 is hard to defend.
14 ZipTie AI
Price: From $58.65 a month billed annually for 500 AI search checks across three engines and 10 content optimisations. $84.15 for 1,000 checks.
URL-level rather than domain-level filtering, indexation audits and a proprietary AI Success Score. Good value at the bottom of the market.
15 LLMrefs
Price: From around $79 a month, with a freemium tier.
Weekly rather than daily cadence, which halves an already thin sample. Limited API and collaboration features.
16 Rankscale
Price: From roughly $20 a month.
Surprisingly data-rich for the price.
17 Trakkr
Price: $79 to $399 a month, plus a free tier.
Built in the UK by Mack Grenfell. Claims daily tracking across eight surfaces including Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI, plus a REST API. Wide engine coverage at a low price is exactly the pattern to interrogate on run counts.
18 Track My Visibility
Price: $42 to $100 a month.
Visibility score, average rank, sentiment and trend.
19 Frase
Price: From around $39 a month, plus a free AI visibility checker.
Monitor and fix in one workflow. Ranks itself first in its own comparison article, which is worth knowing before you read it.
The long tail
Prices here are typically $20 to $300 a month where published. Several are genuinely good. Several are a weekend project with a Stripe link attached.

Two in that list have a specialism worth naming. xFunnel published an analysis of 40,000 AI responses containing 250,000 citations and found that earned content is the largest citation category on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Trendos appears to be the only platform tracking paid placements inside AI answers, which matters more every quarter now that SE Ranking finds text ads on 29.45% of commercial AI Mode queries.
And the open-source option
Elmo is an open-source AI visibility platform where the prompt set is yours to define and export, every raw answer is stored and queryable, and the detection logic is inspectable. If you would rather audit an instrument than trust one, start there. It is also a reminder that the core mechanic is a commodity. Several practitioners, Glen Allsopp among them, report building their own trackers for small-scale tests.
Which SEO suites have bolted an AI module on?
Buy these if you already live in them. The data will be shallower than a dedicated tool, and the integration will save you more time than the depth costs you.

What should a multi-location business buy?
Most of these do not measure AI answers well. What they do is control the structured business record that Gemini and Maps-grounded assistants read, which is the thing that actually moves local AI visibility. For a business with branches, that is the higher-leverage purchase.
| Tool | Indicative price | AI visibility position |
|---|---|---|
| Yext | Entry from $199/yr. Knowledge Graph and Scout are enterprise sales-led | Distributes verified business data directly to 200 and more publishers including ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Scout tracks AI search visibility at location level. The strongest structured-data play in local AI. |
| Local Falcon | From $24.99/mo, 100 free credits | AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok on every plan, plus API, MCP server, Looker Studio and Zapier. Best value in local AI tracking by a distance. |
| Uberall | Quote-based | GEO Studio add-on tracks generative share of voice for multi-location brands across 150 and more directories. |
| SOCi | Custom by location count | Publishes the Local Visibility Index, the best primary dataset on local AI recommendation rates. |
| Synup | From $79/mo, demo required | Agency operating system with white label, API and MCP on every plan. |
| Chatmeter | Custom | Reputation and brand intelligence for multi-location. |
| Birdeye | Custom | Search AI toolset, review-generation led. |
| BrightLocal | Subscription. Managed service $1,299/mo | Does not track AI answers. Prices rising 5 to 10% for new subscribers from 1 July 2026. |
| Whitespark | Per tool | Published the 2026 finding that AI Overviews appear in roughly 68% of local searches against 39% for the local pack. |
| Rio SEO, Partoo, Solocal, GetPin, Moz Local, GBPPromote, Local Dominator, Cheers, RenewLocal, AI Growth Agent | Varies, mostly custom | Regional and niche multi-location platforms with AI layers of varying seriousness. |
Where does PR measurement fit into this?
Earned media accounts for a large share of AI citations, so if the lever you are pulling is coverage rather than pages, the measurement may belong in a media intelligence platform rather than a prompt tracker.
| Tool | Indicative price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Muck Rack | From roughly $5,000/yr, contract | Publishes the Generative Pulse “What Is AI Reading?” study across 25m and more cited links. The single most useful public dataset on what AI actually cites. |
| Meltwater | Enterprise, custom | Broadest source coverage. Overbuilt if AI search is all you need. |
| Cision | Enterprise, custom | Enterprise standard. |
| Brandwatch | Premium | Consumer insight and social listening. |
| Talkwalker | From $500/mo, published | The most price-transparent of the enterprise listening tools. |
| Brand24, Mention | Under $100/mo | Budget brand mention monitoring. Not AI-answer specific. |
| Shadow | Custom | PR operating system with native AI search visibility tracking. |
| Stacker | Custom | Distribution network. Its controlled study with Scrunch is the strongest evidence that distribution beats publication. |
| Prowly, AlphaSense, Critical Mention, TVEyes | Varies | Adjacent. |
Who supplies the data underneath all of this?
Worth knowing, because several of the tools above are reselling one of these.
| Provider | What it supplies |
|---|---|
| Datos | A Semrush, now Adobe, company. Clickstream panel across 185 countries. Powers Semrush AIO. |
| Similarweb | Clickstream and referral panel. Source for the SparkToro zero-click analysis and much of the published referral data. |
| Comscore | Syndicated AI measurement. Its Q1 2026 report put ChatGPT at 244m desktop conversations in March 2026, at 4.9 prompts per conversation. |
| Bright Data, Oxylabs, ScrapingBee, Scrape.do, SerpApi, DataForSEO, Scrapfly | Proxy and scraping infrastructure. If a tool scrapes interfaces, it is almost certainly buying from one of these. |
| G2 | Feeds real buyer prompts and citation data into Profound's AI Visibility Dashboard. |
Are the free visibility checkers worth anything?
As a conversation starter, yes. As a baseline, no, and you should never put one in a report.
Semrush AI Search Visibility Checker, Frase AI Visibility Checker, HubSpot AI Search Grader, the Dageno free GEO report, the Athena, LLMrefs and Trakkr free tiers, Inspeccia, Surchee, geotoolbox and a dozen others all offer a score in under two minutes. Every one of them runs a handful of prompts once.
Inspeccia's own data makes the case against its own product better than we could. Across 2,324 audits between May and July 2026, of the domains visible at least once, 56.9% produced a different answer on a repeat run, with an average swing of 30.8 points.
What does each tool actually cost?
Headline published prices, mid to late 2026, for every tool with public pricing. Verify before buying, because this market reprices constantly and several vendors render prices client-side or hide them behind a demo.

What is the honest case against everything above?
Let us be fair, because a page like this can read as if the whole category is a con, and it is not.
These are young products solving a genuinely hard engineering problem. Querying five engines, repeatedly, from multiple locations, and parsing unstructured answers into a consistent brand mention count is expensive and fiddly. One run a day at $95 a month is a defensible trade-off, not a fraud. Most of the vendors here are not hiding the run count. They are just never asked for it.
A cheap tool you actually open every Monday beats a rigorous one nobody logs into. If Rankscale at $20 a month is what gets a client to take the channel seriously, that is $20 well spent.
The repetition floor we use, seven runs per prompt per engine per day, comes from a University of St Gallen paper on the statistical instability of LLM outputs. It is one paper. It is good, and we lean on it, but it is not a settled industry standard and nobody should pretend otherwise.
And the honest size of the channel: AI referrals remain around 1% of total website traffic, growing roughly a point a month. This is a fast-growing, high-quality, still-small channel. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling urgency.
What is the one number to normalise on?
Ignore the headline price. Ask every vendor for cost per check, where one check is one prompt, on one engine, in one location, on one run. Then multiply it by the runs you need.
The published range as of September 2026 is roughly $0.0125 to $0.04 per check, per the Detailed comparison. Ahrefs sits at the bottom at $0.0125 to $0.0145. Promptwatch and Peec are around $0.020 to $0.025. Semrush is $0.027 to $0.030. Surfer is $0.036. Searchable runs $0.020 to $0.040 depending on volume. Profound is sales-gated.
So a statistically defensible programme on 50 prompts, 3 engines, 7 runs a day is 31,500 checks a month.
$394 to $1,260
Monthly tool cost alone, at published rates, for one client, if you want a number you can defend rather than a daily coin flip.
That figure is the whole argument. Either you budget for it, or you report a single daily run with the margin of error printed next to it. What you cannot honestly do is charge for the second and call it the first.
Which of the tools on your stack has ever told you its cost per check?
Ask them. If the answer is vague, or it arrives as a feature list instead of a number, you have learned something useful for free.
If you would rather start from a measured baseline than a dashboard, that is what our audit does: the same prompts every cycle, screenshots rather than descriptions, and a stated margin of error on every figure.
