How Do You Track Conversions With Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager lets you track the specific actions that actually matter, such as a form submit or a phone number click, and attribute them straight back to the campaign they came from, which is far more reliable than relying on goals set up in Analytics alone.

What does this video cover?

  • 01Tag Manager is easy to put in place on your site: just one or a couple of pieces of JavaScript added to the header and body.
  • 02It lets you track events as people move through your site, landing page views, going back and forth to social media and back again, which buttons get clicked, and which forms get filled.
  • 03More importantly, it shows which campaigns those actions came from, so you can create individual tags to measure individual campaigns.
  • 04This is especially powerful tied to Google Ads, because you can teach Google which specific conversion events you actually value, such as a click on the submit button or a click to call, rather than relying on goals set up in Analytics, which can be a bit flaky.
  • 05Tag Manager attributes your campaign metrics, including cost per acquisition, straight back to the campaign they came from, and pulls out data that might otherwise take hours to find manually.

We have all had a play with Analytics, but if you want to start tracking your conversions properly, I would suggest having a look at Tag Manager. It is dead easy to put in place on your site, just one or a couple of pieces of JavaScript in the header and the body. What it allows you to do is track all sorts of events as people go through your site, whether that is a landing page view, people going backwards and forwards to your social media and back again, which buttons are getting clicked, which forms are getting filled, and more importantly, which campaigns those actions are coming from.

You can create individual tags to measure individual campaigns, which is great tied to something like Google Ads, because you can teach Google what you actually value. Somebody said to me only yesterday that the real gold is in the click of the submit button on a form, or the click of a phone number. With Tag Manager you can properly measure that, rather than setting up goals in Analytics, which can be a bit flaky to say the least, and attribute your actual campaign metrics straight back to which campaign they came from, including your cost per acquisition, pulling that data out easily when it might otherwise take hours to find. Do it properly, have a look at Google Tag Manager, get it installed on your site, and as always, if you need any advice, send me a DM and I will gladly help.
