How do you copy a templated ad group?

You copy it with edit, copy, then edit, paste, anywhere in the Google interface. Now that we have got a template, we can make copies of it at any time we like.

Let us start with the real basics, keywords and audiences. You can obviously look at placements and topics too, and the thing you will learn throughout this course is that you can overlay and combine all of those. In this particular instance I have called this one keywords and audiences.

So select edit, copy, then edit, paste. It is going to ask you where you want to paste it, so I am going to paste it into that same campaign that I am creating, and click paste. You can click pause if you do not want it to go live, so depending on the status of your ad or your ad group at the time, you can just pause it for now.

Once Google has pasted it, it can take a while, so do not panic. Sometimes it can take two, three or four minutes to paste. You can go off and do other things in the meantime if you click run in the background.

How do you tell the copy from the template?

Google adds a little hashtag two after the ad group name, and that is showing you that this is your copy. Let me zoom in for you to help you see that. There it is, a little hashtag two next to it.

What I would always do then is go in and edit it, and edit the name straight away, because this is now no longer the template. So we get rid of that, we are going to leave this as a keywords and audiences ad group, and we are going to put the date on it.

Why does the launch date matter in the name?

Always put the date you launched the campaign in the name, because this is one of the crucial things with Google Ads. As you go along, you are going to see campaigns take their time to learn, grow and get their conversions, and you are going to see a pattern appear throughout your account. That is what you need to pay attention to, and it is always a time-based pattern.

You are going to see campaigns increase over time. You are going to see conversions growing and impressions growing. Then at some point it is going to start to perform marginally worse, and that is what you want to make notes of.

As a general rule, you might find it takes a week or two for a campaign to learn, and three, four or five weeks for a campaign to get to maturity, run really well and get great conversions. This is pretty much dependent on your industry, your sector or your niche. You might find that in your particular industry it is always once a campaign has been running for six weeks that it starts to perform less well.

If you start spotting patterns like that, you will know that you launched a campaign five weeks ago and you have got to pay attention. You can start spinning up duplicate campaigns at that point, so they can come in and replace the one you know is going to start to drop off. All of these sorts of things can be seen from the graphs within Google Ads, and that is something else we will come on to later in the course.

What does the finished name give you?

The finished name tells you what the campaign is, what you are trying to do, and the date you launched it. As I am doing this one it is the 10th of May 2021. For those of you watching in the US, you might put your date in a different format to us. We are in the UK, so we do it this way.

Then that is it. Save that one. Within that campaign itself this is audiences and keywords.

Let us stop there for a second. I am going to go on and show you how to build whichever keywords you are going to work with, and how to work with some audiences in a basic fashion to begin with. Let us stop there and go on to the next lesson.
