How do you create the account?

Go to Google, search for Google Ads, and the first result takes you to ads.google.com. Click start now. This is based on you not having an account at the moment. It will show me some of the accounts I have already got, but we are going to choose new Google Ads account.

It comes up with "what is your main advertising goal". Do not worry about what you put here, because it is just going to walk you through the process. I am already logged in as another account, so we will just skip through that.

Create your business name. Let us call this s.media ads course testing account. Next. What is your website? Hopefully it is not going to say I have already got an ads account when I put that in.

It goes away and finds out a little bit about the site. It has pulled bits about the website. As I say, this part we are really just trying to skip through.

Why does it not matter what you enter?

Because all of this is Google's holding your hand process, and none of it matters to the end result. It might take a minute for it to pick up, depending on how busy Google is. It is going to pull some bits and pieces through from your website. Again, do not really worry what it puts in here, because what it is going to do is set you up a basic ads account and try to get you to create your first ad.

When it has done this, we are just going to pause whatever it creates for us, and then we will get on with doing the job we want to do with YouTube.

So let us call that the ad, scroll down, because as with Google lots of things are hidden out of the way that you cannot see, and click next again. It is going to suggest some keywords. It does not really matter. Again, we are trying to get to the end of this holding your hand process.

Next, what is my daily budget? It does not really matter. Next. It is just trying to get you to create a campaign. Click next again.

What do you have to enter for real?

Your payment details, address, tax status and business contact details. To get your account live you need to put in your payment details. For tax status I always just put your organisation, purpose of use, business, and then the contact details. You will see my mobile number, so do not be phoning me up please, unless you really do need my help.

Let us skip through. Next. It is probably going to try and charge my billing now. Right, we are all done. We now have an account.

Go to our campaign and get started. It is going to try to connect to my Google Analytics. If you have got Google Analytics, I would say it is a good idea to attach it at this point.

What is the first thing to do with the campaign Google made for you?

Pause it and cut the budget. Once you reach this stage you have a basic account, and this is what we are trying to get past, because the features available in Google smart campaigns do not do what we want them to do.

If we go to all campaigns, it is actually pending approval at the moment, so nothing has actually happened. You will have to wait until this goes live. At the moment we have a campaign and it is going to try to spend six pounds a day.

We are going to pause that campaign, because we do not want Google to actually spend anything yet. Click in there, click enter your own budget, and just stick it down to two quid a day to start with, so it does not actually spend anything until we are ready.

What is the essential last step?

Switching to expert mode. Click here, go up to the settings button, then go to settings and switch to expert mode. That is essential, and it is going to give us access to a lot more features. You can see we have now got all of these pieces here, and at the top we have gained access to tools and settings. Within tools and settings you have got all of these different tools, and we are going to talk through some of them in later lessons.

Hopefully that has shown you how to set up your ads account to get going. Remember you need to get into expert mode, and once you are into expert mode we can start moving on.

Where next?

The library holds every video we have published. The AEO pages explain the method behind them, what it costs and what the evidence actually supports.
