When building a templated system for YouTube, the easiest approach by far is to create a campaign first, adding in all the basics: conversions, demographics, time of day, and some ad groups and adverts underneath it. Then pause that campaign and save it as a template. From that point, whenever you need to set up a new campaign, whether it's one built around placements, one built around keywords, or one built around specific custom audiences, you can spin it up just by copying the template, pasting it into the relevant campaign area, and renaming it.

Naming matters here too: a placement campaign name should reflect what type of placements it targets and when it starts, a keyword campaign should reflect which keyword group it contains, and a topic campaign should reflect how topics are being combined with audiences, so the name always fits what the campaign is actually trying to do. Doing it this way, creating the template once, saves a huge amount of time, especially once an account grows to potentially hundreds of campaigns. Once a campaign is found to be working well and the basics are dialled in, you can copy it, strip out the audiences, placements and topics, and you've got another optimised template ready for whatever you're trying to achieve next. Set some templates up as you go, save them within your ad account, pause them, and they're ready to use at any point in the future.
