Why Is Lighting Important When Filming a Video Ad?
Good lighting for a video ad doesn't need a studio, standing in front of a window with natural light hitting your face works well, while lighting from directly above or shooting with a window behind you creates unflattering shadows.

Presented by Flo from s.media, this short explains that you don't need access to a studio with proper lighting, you can get great results just using natural light from the sun. Standing in front of a window that lets in a lot of natural light, with the light hitting your face without harsh shadows, looks flattering and professional. By contrast, standing under a ceiling window, or under any lighting coming from directly above, such as a normal light bulb, creates much harsher shadows and looks far less professional, so it's worth avoiding.
Another thing to watch for is backlighting, where you're facing away from a window so the light hits the back of you rather than the front. That's only acceptable if you also have lighting in front of you, such as an LED light or another light source. Direct sunlight is also worth avoiding, since it can create very harsh shadows too. The overall message is that good lighting doesn't have to be difficult to achieve, and changing where you stand relative to a window can make all the difference.
