You can now ask Siri, Gemini, ChatGPT or Claude a question by voice in the car, and they do not work the same way. On 29 October 2026 Anthropic said Claude's voice mode now works with Apple CarPlay on iPhone. ChatGPT is already in CarPlay, Siri is built into it, and Gemini is in Android Auto. In our view the car is the clearest case of voice-only search: Apple says you can send audio messages with Siri in CarPlay so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving, and OpenAI tells drivers to set up the app before driving and avoid interacting with their device while the vehicle is in motion, so the answer read aloud is the one that counts. For a business, that means clear spoken answers about where you are, when you are open and how to reach you.

What changed this week?
Claude joined the assistants you can talk to through CarPlay. In a post on X on 29 October 2026, Anthropic said that on iPhone, voice mode "now works with Apple CarPlay", so drivers can ask Claude something and keep their hands on the wheel. In a separate post it said voice mode on iOS and Android answers sooner and hears you better in a noisy room. Those are the company's own descriptions; it gave no test results. Anthropic's help page says Claude's voice mode is in beta and can use web search and the tools you have connected, such as Gmail and Google Calendar.
The day before, on Alphabet's earnings call on 28 October 2026, Sundar Pichai said that "one in five AI Mode searches globally use voice, images, or documents", and that AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches. That figure is about Google's AI Mode in general, not the car, and Google did not give a number for voice on its own.
How do the four assistants compare in the car?
Each one gets into the car a different way and leans on different information. This table uses only what each company says on its own pages, checked on 30 October 2026.
| Assistant | How it gets into the car | What the company says it can do |
|---|---|---|
| Siri | Built into Apple CarPlay | Calls, messages and Apple Maps, including searching for points of interest, driving to a favourite restaurant or looking for nearby petrol stations |
| Gemini | Android Auto, as an upgrade from Google Assistant | Natural back-and-forth conversation, finding information in your email, and answers about businesses, restaurants and attractions around you |
| ChatGPT | ChatGPT app in CarPlay on supported iPhones | Start a voice conversation or continue a recent or pinned chat; ChatGPT Voice's Live option can use web search and memory |
| Claude | Claude voice mode in CarPlay on iPhone (announced 29 October 2026) | Voice conversations that can use web search and connected tools; voice mode is labelled beta |

Where do the answers about businesses come from?
Only Google says outright that its car assistant answers questions about nearby businesses, and it does not say which sources it uses. Apple says Maps in CarPlay helps you search for points of interest, and Apple Business is where a business manages how it appears on Apple Maps. OpenAI and Anthropic say their voice modes can use web search, so what they say about a business depends on what that search finds at the time.
None of the four has published how it chooses which business to name, so do not assume one listing covers them all.

What should a business do about it?
Answer the questions a driver asks, in sentences that work when read aloud. Four practical steps:
- Answer the driving questions on your site. Where you are, where to park, your opening hours today, your phone number and whether people need to book. Put each answer in a plain sentence, not only in a picture or a map embed.
- Keep your listings identical. Your name, address, phone number and hours should match on your site, your Google Business Profile and your Apple Business listing for Apple Maps.
- Open key pages with a spoken answer. The first one or two sentences should make sense on their own when read out, without a table or a link to help.
- Make your name easy to say and hear. A driver will ask for you by name. If it is often misheard, say how it is pronounced on your About page.
This is why we work AEO to SEO, not SEO to AEO: start with the answer someone hears, then build the pages and listings that support it.

How do you test it?
Add a car test to your monthly voice check, with the car parked and the engine off. Ask each assistant the questions a driver would ask about your type of business, such as which one nearby is open now. Log who is named, what details are read out and whether they are right. Repeat on the same day each month so you can see changes.
Keep it honest: results depend on location, account and settings, so one test shows what one person heard, not what everyone hears. Our voice search guide covers the full monthly check.
